Letters to Luke: Gratitude

Dear Luke,

Today I want to talk to you about gratitude. Gratitude means noticing the blessings in your life and saying “thank you”—not just to people, but especially to God. It helps your heart focus on what is good, even when life feels hard or confusing.

BIG IDEA: Gratitude is noticing your blessings and thanking God and others for them.

When I first started school, I didn’t speak English because I had just arrived from Cuba. I was nervous and sometimes felt alone, but I was grateful for Manny, who spoke Spanish and also understood English. He would sit next to me and help me understand the lessons. That small act of kindness made a huge difference in my life, and it taught me the power of gratitude: noticing and appreciating the people who bless us.

Gratitude is more than saying words—it’s a way of living. When you see the good around you and take time to thank God and others, your heart grows joyful and content. The Bible reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Even in challenges, gratitude helps us trust God and recognize His care for us.

Here are a few simple gratitude steps you can practice this week:

Write down three things you’re thankful for each day—big or small.

Say “thank you” to one person daily for something they did that helped you.

Tell God one thing you’re grateful for in prayer—morning or night.

Luke, as you grow, I hope you learn to notice the blessings in every day—your family, friends, laughter, learning, and even small acts of love. Gratitude will help your heart stay humble, joyful, and full of peace.

My prayer for you this week:

Lord, teach Luke to live with a grateful heart. Help him see Your blessings, thank You and others with joy, and trust Your care in every circumstance. Amen.

I love you, Luke, and I’m grateful to be your godfather.

Blessings,
Uncle Juan
