Dear Luke,
Today I want to share something really important that will help you in life and in your friendships—speaking up for others.Speaking up means noticing when someone is being treated unfairly, hurt, or left out—and doing something to help. It’s not always easy, but it shows courage, kindness, and care for the people around you.
What Speaking Up Looks Like
Speaking up can be as simple as saying something kind, defending someone who is being teased, or helping someone who can’t help themselves. A bad way to respond is to stay quiet just because it feels easier or safer. A good way is to step in, use your words or actions to help, and protect someone from being hurt or overlooked.
A Story From When I Was Your Age
During school lunch, I would sit with those who were picked on and had no friends. I did not like when others were mistreated, and I often defended them. Even though it wasn’t always easy, standing with them made a difference and showed them they weren’t alone.
A Bible Example
The Bible gives us an amazing example in Esther. She could have stayed silent, but she spoke up to protect her people, even though it was risky. Because she acted with courage and care, she helped save many lives. God wants us to notice when others need help and to act with love and bravery.
✨ BIG IDEA: Speaking up for others takes courage, kindness, and love. It’s not always easy, but it’s the right thing to do and shows God’s heart through you.
How to Speak Up for Others (B.R.A.V.E.)
Here’s an easy way to remember how to speak up. Think of the word B.R.A.V.E.
B — Be aware. Notice when someone needs a friend or help.
R — Reach out. Step in with words or actions.
A — Act kindly. Choose to help in a way that shows care.
V — Voice it. Say something when it’s needed, even if it’s scary.
E — Encourage others. Lift them up and protect them when you can.
Before you act, ask yourself: Is there someone I can help or defend today?
A Prayer You Can Pray
God, help me see when someone needs a friend. Give me the courage to speak up, the wisdom to act in love, and the heart to protect others the way You do. Help me stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard. Amen.
Luke, everyone has moments when they can choose to stay quiet or to act. Choosing to speak up for others is brave, kind, and honors God. I’m proud of the young man you’re becoming, and I’m grateful I get to walk alongside you as your godfather.
With love,
Uncle Juan
