Letters to Luke: Self-control

Dear Luke,

Self-control means being able to stop yourself from saying or doing something you shouldn’t. It’s choosing the right thing even when your feelings are pulling you in the opposite direction. Self-control looks like staying calm when you’re upset, thinking before you speak, and remembering that your actions affect others.

BIG IDEA: Self-control means staying calm, thinking before you act, and choosing the right thing even when it’s hard. ✨

When I was growing up with three sisters, I had to practice a lot of self-control. Sometimes they would tease me or be mean, and everything in me wanted to get angry or fight back. But I learned to take a deep breath and walk away instead of reacting.

As an adult, self-control has helped me even more. It shows up when I decide not to respond negatively to a text or email, when I’m patient with my elderly parents, or when I keep calm around a rude driver on the road. In all these moments, I’ve seen that self-control is truly a gift from God.

The Bible teaches us a lot about self-control. One example is Joseph, who resisted temptation even when no one was watching. Another example is David, who showed self-control by refusing to harm King Saul, even though Saul was trying to hurt him. And Jesus Himself showed perfect self-control—He stayed calm, loving, and obedient even when people were unkind, unfair, or angry toward Him.

Luke, here are some ways you can start practicing self-control as you grow:

Count to five before reacting when you feel upset.

Walk away from arguments instead of saying something hurtful.

Think about how your words might make someone feel.

Ask God for help in the moment—He loves giving strength when we need it.

These small habits will help you grow into a young man who is steady, calm, and wise.

My prayer for you, Luke, is that God will fill you with His peace and strength. I pray He will help you stay calm when things get tough and give you the power to choose what is right.

May self-control become one of the ways you shine God’s love to the people around you.

With love,

Your Godfather,

Uncle Juan
