Dear Luke,
To honor your parents means to show them love, respect, and appreciation. It means listening to them, speaking kindly, and valuing the sacrifices they make for you. Honoring your parents isn’t just about obeying rules—it’s about showing them that you are grateful for who they are and for everything they do to take care of you. When you honor your parents, you help build a home filled with peace, trust, and love.
✨ BIG IDEA: Honoring your parents means showing them love, respect, and gratitude in how you listen, speak, and act.
When I was a kid, I learned to honor my parents by listening to them and helping around the house. I respected their guidance and knew they wanted the best for me. As I grew older, honoring them became even more important. I realized how much they had sacrificed when our family came from Cuba, and how hard they worked to give me opportunities.
As an adult, I honored them by caring for them in the twilight years of their lives—helping them with patience, love, and respect. Honoring your parents changes as you grow, but the heart behind it stays the same.
The Bible talks a lot about honoring parents. In the Ten Commandments, God tells us to “Honor your father and mother,” and it’s the first commandment with a promise—that things will go well for us. Jesus also honored His mother Mary, even while He was suffering on the cross, by making sure she was cared for. These examples show us that honoring parents matters deeply to God and reflects His love in our families.
Luke, here are a few ways you can honor your parents as you grow:
Listen when they speak and follow their instructions.
Talk to them respectfully, even when you’re frustrated.
Help at home without being asked.Say “thank you” often—they do more than you know.
Pray for them and ask God to bless them.
These small actions go a long way in showing your love and respect.
My prayer for you, Luke, is that God will give you a grateful heart that honors your parents with joy. I pray you’ll grow into a young man who listens with respect, serves with kindness, and loves deeply. May your relationship with your parents always be filled with peace, understanding, and God’s grace.
With love,
Your Godfather,
Juan
