Coffee Table Reflections: The God Who Longs for Us

For much of my life, I thought of God primarily as the One we pursue—the One we seek, obey, and draw near to. There have also been times when I thought of God as the cold, stoic problem-solver of the universe—mechanical in nature, distant, and lacking emotion.

And while those views contain fragments of truth, Scripture has gently reshaped my understanding over time. I’ve come to see that before I ever longed for God, He was already longing for me.

There are moments when I feel distant, distracted, or weary in my faith. And yet, again and again, I discover that God’s posture toward me has not changed. He is not reluctant or withdrawn. He is a God who desires relationship, who moves toward His people, and who invites us into His presence with patience and compassion.

1. God’s Longing Is Rooted in Love, Not Obligation

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” — Jeremiah 31:3

God does not draw near to us out of duty or requirement. His longing flows from love. From the very beginning, God has desired to dwell with His people—to walk with them, to know them, and to be known by them. His invitations are not demands, but expressions of a heart that wants communion, not compliance.

2. God Longs for Us Even When We Feel Distant

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8

There are seasons when my faith feels strong and attentive, and seasons when it feels scattered and weak. What comforts me is knowing that God’s longing for me does not fluctuate with my spiritual consistency.

Even when I wander, He remains present. Even when I grow quiet, He continues to speak. God’s desire for us is steady, patient, and persistent.

3. God’s Longing Invites Us Back, Not Away

“Return to Me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts.” — Malachi 3:7

God’s longing is never meant to shame us—it is meant to draw us home. He does not stand at a distance waiting for us to get it right. Instead, He moves toward us with grace, inviting us to return, to rest, and to remain. When we respond to His longing, we discover that the nearness we seek has been offered all along.
