Encountering God Through the Honoring of Our Bodies

Encountering God isn’t always about prayer or worship — sometimes, He meets us in the simple, everyday choices we make with our bodies. Scripture reminds us that our bodies are sacred vessels — handcrafted by God and entrusted to us with love and purpose.

Yet it’s easy to neglect these vessels in our busy, modern lives. More than one‑third of U.S. adults don’t get the recommended 7 hours of sleep each night, and roughly 40 % of adults are classified as obese. Overlooking rest, movement, and proper nourishment can affect not only our physical health but also our emotional and spiritual well‑being.

For me, honoring my body has been deeply personal. Taking care of myself isn’t optional — it’s part of how I manage depression, stay grounded, and remain connected to God. When I slow down, rest, move, and nourish myself well, I create space for Him to meet me right where I am.

This isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about offering God the best version of yourself — body, mind, and soul — and discovering that He often shows up in the places we’ve been neglecting. In this blog, I’ll explain why we should honor our bodies, share the benefits of doing so, and provide practical tools and resources to help you get started.

Why Honor Our Bodies

Stewardship

When we talk about honoring our bodies, we’re really talking about stewardship. God entrusted us with these bodies—not as burdens, but as gifts. And just like any gift He gives, He invites us to care for it, protect it, and use it well.

Think of it this way: your body is the place where God meets you. It’s where you carry His presence. When we take care of it, we’re simply honoring what He already calls valuable.

The Connection Between Body and Spirit

Our bodies and spirits are deeply connected. When our body is neglected—through lack of rest, poor nutrition, or stress—our spirit often feels weighed down, anxious, or disconnected from God. Conversely, when we nurture our body, it opens space for our spirit to thrive. Rested, nourished, and cared-for bodies allow us to think more clearly, pray more deeply, and sense God’s presence more fully.

Good Health Allows Us to Accomplish God’s Will for Our Lives

Good health isn’t about looking impressive; it’s about being available. When I’m rested, fueled, and emotionally steady, I’m far more able to serve, love, and show up for the people God places in my life.

When our bodies are weighed down—by exhaustion, poor rhythms, or neglect—it’s harder to pour ourselves out for others. But when we honor our bodies, we’re strengthening the vessel God uses to accomplish His work through us.

Benefits

I’ve noticed that honoring my body brings a ripple effect into every part of my life. You might notice some of the same things:

A clearer mind and steadier emotions, making it easier to hear God’s voice

More energy to serve, work, and care for the people you love

A deeper sense of God’s presence, because a healthy body often quiets a noisy mind

Improved relationships, as patience and empathy grow when we’re physically healthy

Stronger spiritual discipline, because healthy habits in the body spill into healthy habits in the soul

A more positive self-image, as caring for your body fosters confidence, self-respect, and gratitude for the gift God has given you

In the Bible

Scripture doesn’t shy away from the importance of the body. In fact, God speaks to it often:

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 – Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, reminding us to honor God with what we’ve been given.

Romans 12:1 – Presenting our bodies to God is part of our worship.

Daniel 1:8–17 – Daniel honored God through his physical choices, and God strengthened him for it.

Proverbs 3:7–8 – Trusting God brings refreshment and health to our bodies.

Psalm 139:13–14 – You are fearfully and wonderfully made; your body is no accident.

These passages gently remind us that God cares deeply about our physical well-being.

Getting Started

See your doctor. Get a physical and have some blood work done to create your health base. This will provide a roadmap for you to follow. When I got the results from my blood work, I knew I had some work to do.

If you’re wondering where to begin beyond that, don’t overcomplicate it. Start small. Here are a few simple steps that have helped me:

1. Rest well. Your body needs recovery. Give yourself permission to slow down without guilt. Establish a healthy night routine—what you do in the evening will determine the quality of your mornings.

2. Move daily. I walk with my neighbor to establish accountability. Remember, this is not about distance—it’s about consistency. Movement is worship too.

3. Choose foods that strengthen you. Not to restrict, but to nourish. Think of it as fueling the work God has called you to. Every food choice I make is an opportunity to honor God.

4. Join a group. I joined Weight Watchers to lose weight and establish good eating habits. Being part of a supportive community helps with accountability and encouragement.

5. Protect your time. Make sure you carve out time for what is most important—nurturing your spiritual and physical health.

6. Learn to say no. Remind yourself, especially when you’re out to dinner with friends and family, that you don’t have to adopt their bad eating habits.

Remember: small steps done consistently can transform the way you encounter God.

Closing Thoughts

Honoring your body is one of the quietest, yet most powerful ways you can encounter God in your daily life. It’s an invitation to partner with Him—to care for the vessel He lovingly crafted and entrusted to you.

As you take steps toward better health, don’t forget this: God delights in your whole self. Not just your spirit. Not just your mind. But your body too.

When you honor your body, you’re opening a door for God to strengthen you, restore you, and meet you in ways you may have overlooked. And the more you lean into this practice, the more you’ll discover that tending to your body is another way of tending to your soul.
