Encountering God Through Community

I’ve learned that one of the clearest ways we encounter God is through the people He places in our lives. I didn’t learn this from a book or a sermon—it came through a season of deep suffering. When life felt heavy and uncertain, God sent people who prayed for me, encouraged me, and simply showed up.

Whether it was our Saturday morning men’s gathering, our BSF group, or our church family, these communities brought healing and growth. They reminded me I was not alone—and that God’s love often flows through His people.

In this blog, we will examine why we should be part of a faith community, what the Bible says, what the benefits are, and what steps we can take to cultivate deeper connections with others.

Why Community

God designed us for connection. We weren’t meant to walk through life alone. Community isn’t just a nice addition to our faith; it’s one of the primary ways God shows Himself, shapes us, and carries us through life’s ups and downs.

In the Bible

The early church in Acts 2:42–47 devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, meals, and prayer. They supported one another so fully that “there were no needy persons among them.”

The New Testament repeatedly calls believers to care for one another:

“Love one another with brotherly affection.” – Romans 12:10

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” – Galatians 6:2

“Encourage one another and build one another up.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

“Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.” – Hebrews 10:24

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32

These verses show that spiritual, emotional, and practical support are all part of a healthy faith community.

Benefits of Community

Support and Prayer

One of the greatest gifts I’ve received from community is support during overwhelming moments. During bouts of depression, when I could barely find the words to pray, others prayed for me. Their presence reminded me that even when I felt weak, God’s love was real and active.

Encouragement

Encouragement has been a lifeline during tough days. During chemo and radiation, a message, a visit, or a word of reassurance made a huge difference. It reminded me that God hadn’t forgotten me, and His people were carrying me when I couldn’t carry myself.

New Friendships

Through small groups, I’ve gotten to know neighbors, made new friends, and built relationships that enriched my life and helped me grow in faith. These friendships bring joy and support.

Learning and Growth

Community provides opportunities to learn and grow spiritually. Book studies and Bible studies have been especially meaningful. Hearing different perspectives, sharing experiences, and seeing God at work in others’ lives has challenged and encouraged me, stretching my faith in ways I couldn’t have experienced alone.

Getting Started

Stepping into community can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. I want to invite you to take one small step—any of the ones below—and trust that God can meet you there.

Get Out of the House

Isolation is poison to the soul. Start small. Take a walk with a friend. Invite a neighbor for coffee. These simple steps can open the door to connection, joy, and meaningful relationships.

Find a Church to Worship

A local church can become a spiritual home—a place to worship, grow, serve, and connect with people who will walk with you through all seasons of life.

Join a Small Group

Whether it’s a Bible study, prayer group, or a gathering built around shared interests, small groups create space for connection, encouragement, and spiritual growth.

Start Your Own Group

If you don’t see a group that fits, create one. A small Bible study, prayer group, or men’s/women’s gathering can bring encouragement and friendship.

Be Vulnerable and Open

Share both victories and struggles. Opening up invites others to walk alongside you and strengthens your faith through shared experiences.

Closing Thoughts

Community isn’t optional—it’s a gift God uses to shape, sustain, and carry us.

Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Step into community today. Walk alongside others, let them walk alongside you, and watch how God uses these connections to transform your heart, strengthen your faith, and bring healing to places you thought were beyond hope.
