This morning started like so many others. My dear friend Robert sent me his usual verse of the day—something he’s been doing faithfully for years. It’s become one of those quiet anchors for me, a small reminder that God is already speaking before my day even begins. Today he sent me John 17:17: “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
I slowed down and decided to sit with it for a while. As I read, I remembered that this verse comes from Jesus’ prayer the night before the cross. In those last, tender hours, Jesus wasn’t thinking about Himself—He was praying for His disciples. He prayed for their protection, for their unity, for their strength. And then He asked the Father to sanctify them.
What struck me this morning is that Jesus didn’t pray this just so His disciples would feel more spiritual. He prayed it because they had a mission. They had purpose. They were being sent into the world to represent Him.
And the same is true for us. God doesn’t sanctify us so we can sit around, stay comfortable, and count seashells on the beach—though there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the beach or the good gifts God gives. But sanctification isn’t about retreating from life. It’s about being equipped for life.
It actually reminded me of when I joined the Marines. The moment I enlisted, I was no longer a civilian. I stepped into a new identity, a new way of life, new expectations, new discipline. I was set apart and trained for the mission and purposes of the United States Marine Corps. It would have been foolish—and honestly unacceptable—for me to continue living like a civilian. And in a similar way, when we come to Christ, we step into a new identity. We are a new creation. Set apart. Called for His purposes.
Sanctification is God shaping us for that calling. He’s not preparing us to stay still—He’s preparing us to step into something, to love, serve, speak, obey, and use the gifts He’s entrusted to us for His glory.
As I reflected on Robert’s verse this morning, I felt God gently reminding me that sanctification isn’t passive. It’s not a spiritual hobby. It’s preparation. God is shaping me for something He wants to do in and through my life.
A few questions I found myself asking:
- Where is God shaping me for something ahead?
- Am I treating sanctification like training—or like optional enrichment?
- How am I using the gifts He’s given me to build others up and honor Him?
- What old “civilian habits” is God inviting me to leave behind?
I’m grateful for friends like Robert who send a simple verse that ends up awakening something deeper. And I’m even more grateful for a Savior who prays for my growth long before I realize how much I need it.
“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
Friends may that land on your heart today the way it did on mine. God is shaping you—not to sit on the sidelines, but to live out your calling with purpose and joy for His glory.
