Coffee Table Reflections: Remembering the Goodness and Love of God

Introduction

There are moments when my depression grows heavy and my thoughts turn dark. Fear begins to whisper. Guilt resurfaces. Disappointment — in myself, in circumstances, in unmet expectations — settles in like a thick fog.

In those seasons, I’ve learned something important: my feelings are loud, but they are not always truthful.

So I write.

I wrote this reflection first and foremost for myself — to remember who God is and how He truly feels about me according to Scripture. Not according to my emotions. Not according to my performance. Not according to the accusations in my own mind.

When my heart forgets, I return to what is unchanging:

His character.

His promises.

His steadfast love.

If you are walking through a similar valley, perhaps these reminders will steady you too.

1. Chosen, Held, and Kept

Before there was a sunrise.

Before there was breath in my lungs.

Before there was failure, fear, or doubt —You chose me.

You know my name. Not just my public name, but the one that carries my whole story. You cherish me. You call me Your child. You hold me in the palm of Your hand.

Nothing can separate me from Your love.

You are my God. You help me. You strengthen me. You uphold me with Your righteous right hand. You are the Father of all mercy — gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love.

Your love is not fragile.

It is not moody.

It is not dependent on my performance.

Your steadfast love never ceases. Your mercies are new every morning. You rejoice over me with singing. You quiet me with Your love. You crown me with lovingkindness and tender mercies.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is sit still long enough to remember:

I am chosen.

I am held.

I am kept.

2. Shepherded Through Valleys

Life is not lived on mountaintops alone.

There are valleys. There are shadows. There are seasons that stretch longer than we expected.

Yet even there — You shepherd me.

You make me lie down in green pastures. You lead me beside still waters. You restore my soul. You guide me along right paths for Your name’s sake.

When the valley darkens and uncertainty rises, I will not fear — because You are with me. Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows.

Surely Your goodness and mercy follow me — not occasionally, not conditionally — but all the days of my life.

You are near to the brokenhearted. You save those crushed in spirit. You are my refuge and my fortress.

Even in pain, I am not abandoned.

I am shepherded.

3. Loved in My Weakness

Perhaps the most astonishing truth of all:

While I was still a sinner — Christ died for me.

Lord Jesus, You are gentle and lowly in heart. You are not appalled by my failures. You do not recoil from my weakness. You move toward me. You meet me in my pain. You minister to me in my need.

Nothing can snatch me from Your hand. You give eternal life. You discipline me as a loving Father. You work in me both to desire and to act according to Your good purpose.

You will complete the good work You began in me.

You will never leave me nor forsake me.

You promise that all things — even the hard things — are being woven together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose.

And when I confess, You are faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse.

I am loved before I perform.

I am pursued when I fail.

I am sustained when I am weak.

This is who You are.

This is who I am because of You.

And this is why I trust You.

North Star

Because God’s love is steadfast and His goodness is certain, I will anchor my heart in who He is — not in how I feel.

Reflection Questions

Which truth in this reflection do I most need to remember in this season of my life?

Where have I been tempted to measure God’s love by my circumstances instead of His character?

What would change this week if I truly lived as someone who is chosen, shepherded, and deeply loved?

Closing Prayer

Father of mercy, thank You for loving me before I loved You. Thank You for holding me, shepherding me, and sustaining me. When my heart forgets, remind me. When my faith wavers, steady me. Anchor me in Your unchanging love and help me live each day as one who is chosen, kept, and deeply loved.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
