Valley Lessons: Part 2

God uses others to carry us through suffering

1 Thessalonians 5:11- “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

God used others to walk with me through my suffering—a loving wife who cared for me through it all, a counselor who listened with compassion, a pastor who prayed with me regularly, and an elder who offered quiet strength over coffee. Through their voices, prayers, and presence, I felt God’s nearness—not in thunder or lightning, but in gentle love that carried me through the storm.

Lesson Learned

God heals us through community. In our trials, He surrounds us with people whose prayers, wisdom, and presence become channels of His love.

Reflection Question

Who has God placed in your life to walk with you through suffering?

Our Comfort Can Comfort Others

2 Corinthians 1:3–4 – “The God of all comfort… comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction.”

In that mental health facility, I was ministered to by broken people. Now I know that my brokenness, too, can be used to bring hope and healing to others walking through their own valleys. Jesus uses wounded healers to reach the hurting. Jesus doesn’t love like we do. His love is not cautious. It is poured out. He overflows into our lives—and through us into others.

Lesson Learned

God’s love flows through our brokenness. He uses our wounds as vessels of His compassion, pouring His strength and hope into us so it can overflow to others in their valleys.

Reflection Question

How might God be inviting you to use your pain or story to bring comfort, encouragement, or hope to someone else who is suffering?

God’s Grace Is Sufficient

2 Corinthians 12:9 – “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”

When I was frail, confused, and at the end of myself, His grace met me there. In the darkest moments, when I had no clarity, no strength, and no answers, His presence didn’t withdraw—it drew closer. I didn’t have the strength to take the next step, form a prayer, or hold myself together—but He carried me. Not in sweeping, dramatic gestures, but moment by moment, breath by breath. His grace was not just a distant concept; it became my lifeline.

Lesson Learned

Grace meets us where we break. God doesn’t wait for our strength—He draws near in our weakness, giving daily grace that turns breaking points into beginnings of deeper trust in Him.

Reflection Question

When have you experienced God’s grace carrying you through a time of weakness—and how might that experience change the way you approach future struggles?
