Two Worlds, One Calling: Commitment

When I hear the word commitment, I think about determination—the kind that keeps you going when things get tough. It’s about showing up, learning, and doing the right thing, even when no one’s watching. Over time, it shapes who you are, not just what you do.

I remember one moment during the Persian Gulf War that really drove that home. General Schwarzkopf ordered the “Left Hook” maneuver, and my convoy was part of it. The days were long, the heat and dust were relentless, and failure wasn’t an option. Every Marine had a role, and in those moments, I realized commitment wasn’t just a word—it was what kept us moving forward together when everything else felt uncertain.

That experience shaped how I see commitment today. It’s about discipline, caring for others, holding yourself to a high standard, and staying the course even when it’s uncomfortable. Without it, things fall apart. But when you truly commit—to the mission, to the people depending on you, to God—it carries you through the hardest moments. For me, commitment became a way of living that shaped who I am.

The Spiritual Parallel

Being a committed Christian is more than just believing in Jesus. It’s about picking up our cross and following Him—standing on the sidelines is not an option. Following Jesus is a daily choice, and every believer has a role to play.

Jesus was fully committed to the mission set before Him. He left the glory of heaven to live among us, fully aware of the cost. When the days were long and the sacrifice was real, He didn’t turn back. His obedience carried Him all the way to the cross. Scripture says: “For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

For me, commitment in faith has taken shape in practical ways. My desire to help others grow spiritually led me to start two neighborhood Bible studies. I’m committed to using the spiritual gifts God has given me in ways that bless others and honor Him. Like in the military, this takes showing up consistently, even when it’s hard, and trusting God with the outcome.

Just as commitment held us together in the desert, commitment to Christ holds us steady today. It shapes who we are and reminds us that we’re part of something far bigger than ourselves.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where is God inviting me to deepen my commitment rather than look for an easier way out?
  2. How do I respond when following Christ is uncomfortable or requires sacrifice?
  3. Who is depending on my faithfulness right now, and how might my commitment strengthen them?

North Star: Commitment carries us through hard times. It keeps us faithful to God, to the people depending on us, and to the mission He’s called us to.

Call to Action

Stop living as though your choices don’t matter. Let go of everything hindering your commitment to God’s mission for your life. Get back in the game. This week, pick one area where you’ve been tempted to pull back—maybe in your walk with God, a relationship, or a responsibility. Take a small, intentional step to recommit. Pray, act, and trust God with the outcome.

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing us what true commitment looks like through Jesus. When the road feels long and the cost is heavy, help us stay faithful to You and to the people You’ve placed in our lives. Strengthen our resolve, deepen our trust, and shape our hearts to reflect Yours. Amen.
