Letters to Luke: Choosing Good Friends

Dear Luke,

A good friend is someone who cares about you, encourages you, and helps you become the best version of yourself. Good friends tell the truth, keep their promises, and stand by you when life gets tough. They celebrate your wins and walk with you through hard times.

Choosing good friends is important because the people you spend time with shape who you become. Friends can lift you up—or pull you down—so it’s important to choose people who bring out the good in you.

BIG IDEA: Choosing good friends means spending time with people who are kind, honest, and encourage you to do what’s right.

When I was twelve years old, I met two boys named DominicK ( your grandfather) and Carlos, and they became my best friends in the world. We hung out together, played sports together, and went to the same schools. They looked after me and protected me from bullies. We laughed a lot, learned a lot, and grew up together as brothers.

As an adult, they are still my best friends. Today we vacation together, go to church together, enjoy dinners, and simply love spending time with one another. Our friendship has stayed strong because it was built on loyalty, kindness, and trust.

The Bible also shows us what good friendship looks like. David and Jonathan shared a deep, loyal friendship—they supported one another and protected each other, even when life was dangerous and complicated. Jesus also showed us what true friendship means by loving His disciples, teaching them, and laying down His life for them. Proverbs tells us, “A friend loves at all times” and “Walk with the wise and become wise.” Good friendships help us grow closer to God and become wiser, stronger people.

Luke, here are some things you can do as you grow to choose good friends:

Look for kids who are kind, honest, and respectful.

Choose friends who encourage you to do what’s right, not what’s wrong.

Choose friends who honor and respect their parents.

Be a good friend yourself—loyal, patient, and trustworthy.

Spend time with people who make you better, not people who pull you down.

Good friendships will add joy and strength to your life.

My prayer for you, Luke, is that God will surround you with strong, loving, and godly friends. I pray He brings people into your life who will encourage you, stand with you, and grow with you. May your friendships always reflect God’s goodness and bring joy to your heart.

With love,

Your Godfather,

Juan
